As a Professional Transportation Engineer in the Highway Design group, you will deliver transportation projects of varying scope and complexity throughout Minnesota and nationally. You will have the opportunity to work closely with MnDOT and contractors on high-profile, local Design-Build (DB), Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC), and traditional design projects. Utilize your technical expertise to design roadway geometry, compute design calculations, and prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates. Apply your management skills to lead a team of graduate engineers and technicians to deliver projects.
Other activities will include resolving design issues with proactive and innovative solutions, checking design work per the Design Quality Management Plan, and engaging in professional development activities to grow your client network. You will also assist with the preparation of work scopes, budgets, and schedules.
Responsibilities:
- Preliminary and Final Roadway Design - developing all aspects of roadway design including typical sections, alignments, profiles, superelevation, and guardrail
- Intersection Design - designing for safety and mobility at traditional at-grade intersections, roundabouts, J-turns, and interchanges
- ADA Design - scoping and designing accessible pedestrian facilities in new construction and retrofits
- Multi-disciplinary Design Integration - ensuring that all aspects of roadway, drainage, and traffic designs mesh together in a seamless final design
- Plans, Specs, and Estimates - organizing and leading production of complete PS&E packages for successful letting and construction
- Quality Control - checking technical documents for accuracy, compliance with standards, biddability, and buildability
- Project Leadership - organizing the work of the design team to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery
- Team Development - planning developmentally appropriate tasks for junior staff to rapidly grow their technical capabilities, engineering judgement, and drive for excellence
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (or related engineering field)
- Licensed Professional Engineer
- 4+ years highway design experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Technical expertise using Microstation/Geopak and Open Roads Designer on transportation projects
- Commitment to delivering high-quality work on schedule
- Skillful in presenting technical concepts to clients and the public in understandable terms
- Experience supervising, leading, teaching, and mentoring project staff
- History of establishing and fostering strong client relationships
- Experience writing proposals
