Position Overview:
As a Traffic Design Engineer, you will be responsible for planning, designing, and implementing traffic control solutions to improve safety and efficiency on our roadways. You will work on a variety of projects, from road expansions to intersection improvements, and contribute to the enhancement of transportation systems in the North Chicago region.
Key Responsibilities:
Traffic Control Design: Develop comprehensive traffic control plans, including traffic signal design, roadway signage, pavement markings, and lighting systems, to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.
Traffic Impact Studies: Conduct traffic impact assessments and studies to evaluate the effects of proposed developments on the existing transportation network, and propose mitigation strategies.
Intersection Design: Design and optimize intersections for improved traffic capacity, safety, and pedestrian access, while adhering to local and state regulations.
Transportation Modeling: Utilize transportation modeling software (e.g., VISSIM, SYNCHRO) to simulate traffic conditions, analyze traffic data, and recommend optimization strategies.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all traffic designs comply with relevant federal, state, and local regulations, standards, and guidelines.
Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including civil engineers, planners, and government agencies, to integrate traffic designs into broader infrastructure projects.
Budget and Timeline Management: Manage project budgets and timelines effectively, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget constraints.
Client Interaction: Maintain effective communication with clients, providing updates on project progress, addressing their concerns, and ensuring their requirements are met.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field; a Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
3+ years of experience in traffic engineering and design.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and traffic engineering software.
Strong understanding of traffic signal design, signal timing, and traffic analysis techniques.
Knowledge of local and state transportation regulations and standards.
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
Project management experience is a plus.
