Transmission System Operator
This role is responsible for taking real-time actions, including shedding firm load, to maintain the reliability of the Bulk Electric System during normal and emergency conditions. The operator works under PJM's authority, functioning as a Reliability Coordinator, Transmission Operator, and Balancing Authority. Critical reliability tasks are performed independently without higher-level approval.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor the bulk electric system and respond to changes.
- Handle emergency events, disturbances, and weather/system changes.
- Control transmission and distribution equipment using SCADA.
- Prepare switching orders and provide instructions to field personnel.
- Maintain operational logs for reporting accuracy.
Required Certifications:
- Obtain NERC and PJM Transmission Operator certifications within 6 months (4 test attempts max).
- Complete Dominion's Operator Qualification program within 18 months (12 months if already certified).
Required Experience & Skills:
- 3+ years of electrical or mechanical experience in utility, industrial, or production environments.
- 18+ months of experience in a System Operator role or equivalent.
- Knowledge of NERC regulations, electrical principles, control systems, substation operations, and industrial safety.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, EMS, OMS, verbal/written communication, and problem-solving.
- Ability to think critically and handle high-stress situations.
Other Requirements:
- Must be available for 12-hour rotating shifts and emergency storm-related events.
- Must operate a Dominion Energy vehicle.
Preferred:
- Current NERC and PJM certifications.
- Utility experience and knowledge of PJM regulations.
