Construction Commissioning Manager
Our client is a unique company in the data center world, a trailblazing firm in Engineering and Commissioning, working with some of the biggest hyperscalers and data center developers.
Position: Commissioning Construction Manager/Owner's Representative Location: Remote/travelling with a base in Columbus, OH. Initial deployment to Columbus until April 2026 or project completion, followed by extensive travel across the US. Positions also available in IA.& IN.
This role integrates traditional Owner's Representative and Construction Manager duties with specialized leadership in electrical, mechanical, and controls commissioning within mission-critical environments (L1-L5 phases). The successful candidate will ensure project delivery to the highest standards of quality, schedule, and scope, with all systems fully tested, documented, and ready for operational turnover.
Key Responsibilities:
- Construction Management & Project Oversight: Act as the client's on-site advocate, ensuring commissioning activities align with quality control specifications and programmatic expectations. Lead risk identification, facilitate communication among all stakeholders (design team, contractors, vendors, commissioning agents, trade partners), and support compliance.
- Commissioning Leadership (L1-L5 Focus): Oversee and coordinate all commissioning activities, including pre-functional checklists, functional performance tests, integrated systems testing, and final acceptance. Ensure field activities adhere to commissioning plans and QAQC programs.
- Readiness for Operations: Validate that all systems are fully commissioned, operational, and meet owner requirements. Ensure all documentation, punch lists, and test results are complete and accurate for operational turnover. Drive timely issue resolution.
- Document Control & Technical Reviews: Review commissioning plans, drawings, submittals, and RFIs. Maintain field document control and ensure all commissioning records are accessible. Utilize common industry tools (e.g., Procore, BIM 360/ACC, Bluebeam, MS Project/P6, Excel/PowerPoint/Teams) for traceability and reporting.
- Reporting & Metrics: Provide regular commissioning updates and status reports to stakeholders, facilitate root-cause analysis for non-conformances, track dispositions, and generate metrics to communicate site commissioning compliance.
Requirements:
- Skills & Knowledge: Strong understanding of commissioning processes for electrical, mechanical, and controls systems in mission-critical environments. Proficiency with MS Office suite. Ability to leverage AI, data analytics, and emerging technologies. Clear, concise technical and non-technical communication. Proven ability to manage schedules and enforce commissioning standards.
- Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction, or a related field OR two years of hands-on installation, testing, validation, and troubleshooting experience in mechanical, controls, and/or electrical infrastructure, plus a minimum of five additional years of relevant experience.
- Certifications & Safety: Ability to achieve NFPA 70E and/or OSHA training as required; strict adherence to HSE/LOTO policies.
Physical Demands: The role requires frequent manipulation of small parts/tools, periods of stationary work, movement through data center and outdoor environments (including tight spaces, stairs, ladders, and varying weather), occasional overhead/under-equipment positioning, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodations are available.
Travel / Relocation: Must possess a valid driver's license and the ability to rent vehicles. Travel will be 75-100% in various support roles, potentially including all 50 US states, until an extended project assignment (9 months - 4 years). Relocation to a project site within 1-3 months may be required if not local. Temporary or permanent relocation assistance is available.
