Position Overview
The Geotechnical Engineer (Mid‑Level / Project Engineer) will play a key role within the Knoxville operation, supporting both ongoing project delivery and continued regional growth.
This position is suited to a technically strong engineer who enjoys both hands-on project delivery and client engagement. You will serve as a key technical contributor and emerging leader-supporting project execution, mentoring junior staff, and engaging in business development activities-while building toward more senior responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and oversee subsurface investigations, including planning field exploration programs and evaluating geotechnical data
- Prepare and review geotechnical engineering reports, including analyses, recommendations, and design considerations
- Serve as a technical resource for transportation and DOT-related projects
- Conduct engineering analyses related to foundations, earthwork, slope stability, and ground improvement
- Provide field support and observation, including construction-phase services and site visits
- Support project management functions, including budgeting, scheduling, and quality control
- Participate in client meetings, project scoping, and proposal preparation
- Contribute to business development efforts, including maintaining and expanding client relationships within the Knoxville region
- Mentor and support junior engineers and field staff, fostering technical growth and team development
- Collaborate across disciplines to support expansion into additional service lines
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field
- Approximately 5-10 years of geotechnical consulting experience
- Strong background in:
- Subsurface investigations and drilling coordination
- Laboratory testing and soil/rock classification
- Engineering analysis and report preparation
- Construction observation and field services
- Demonstrated experience working on multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence in client-facing settings
- Ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) licence, or ability to obtain in the near term
- Experience with DOT and transportation projects (highly desirable)
- Familiarity with regional geotechnical conditions in Tennessee and the Southeast
- Experience mentoring junior staff or leading small project teams
- Exposure to business development or client relationship management activities
