A well-established consulting firm is seeking experienced Senior Construction Inspectors to support transportation infrastructure projects throughout the Hampton Roads area. This role involves inspection and oversight of roadway and bridge construction, including design-build projects, with opportunities for advancement into construction management and office engineering roles.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect construction activities to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and safety standards.
- Independently manage inspection phases for complex projects involving traffic control, environmental sensitivity, and stakeholder coordination.
- Communicate effectively with contractors, project teams, and public agencies.
- Supervise junior inspectors and ensure quality control across inspection deliverables.
- Lead project meetings and collaborate with various stakeholders.
- Resolve technical challenges and provide sound engineering solutions.
- Monitor contractor performance and document non-compliance.
- Verify field measurements, grades, and elevations using standard equipment.
- Track material placement and testing; perform field measurements and quantity tracking.
- Maintain detailed project documentation including daily reports, compliance records, and payment tracking.
- Support project schedule and budget monitoring, and assist with change order analysis.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in transportation-related construction inspection.
- Strong communication skills and proficiency in basic math (algebra, geometry).
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and construction documentation software.
- Experience supervising inspection teams and working independently.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Required Certifications
Candidates should possess or be able to obtain within 6 months a combination of the following certifications relevant to transportation construction inspection:
- Materials Testing (Soil, Asphalt, Concrete)
- Work Zone Safety and Traffic Control
- Erosion and Sediment Control / Stormwater Management
- Guardrail and Pavement Marking
- OSHA Safety Training
- Nuclear Gauge Safety
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with roadway, bridge, asphalt, concrete, and pavement marking inspections.
- Familiarity with state DOT standards and local agency procedures.
- Proficiency with construction document management tools (e.g., PlanGrid, SharePoint).
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
- Construction Manager certifications (e.g., CCM, CMIT) are a plus.
