JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS
About the Role
My client is seeking a skilled and experienced Controls Engineer to join their team. This role involves working closely with customers to design, develop, and implement control systems across a variety of industries. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in engineering, automation, and project leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborate with customers to develop comprehensive User Requirements documentation.
- Lead project teams in executing controls hardware and/or software scopes.
- Create control specifications (control narratives) based on user requirements.
- Conduct feasibility studies for proposed projects, including cost estimates and supporting documentation.
- Review and mark up Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for instrumentation and control changes.
- Design low-voltage (up to 480V) electrical control systems, including panel drawings, loop sheets, I/O diagrams, and network schematics.
- Develop or oversee programming for Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
- Configure Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
- Set up and configure data historians.
- Develop and execute testing plans for DCS and PLC programs.
- Simulate and test control systems to ensure functionality and reliability.
- Provide on-site support during electrical controls installation and verify compliance with design specifications.
- Perform I/O checkout and document results.
- Offer post-commissioning support to client operations, engineering, and maintenance teams.
- Travel to client sites as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or related), Computer Science, or a similar technical field.
Preferred Experience
- 10+ years in a similar engineering role.
- 5+ years of experience with one or more of the following platforms:
- PLC/DCS Platforms: Allen Bradley (PLC5, SLC500, MicroLogix, ControlLogix), Siemens (S7, PCS7), Emerson (DeltaV, Ovation, Provox), Novatech D/3, Honeywell Experion, Foxboro I/A.
- HMI/SCADA Platforms: Rockwell Automation, Inductive Automation, Wonderware, Siemens, iFix, Iconics.
- Historian/Data Analytics: OSIsoft PI, PTC Thingworx, Ignition, Aspentech, Rockwell, Siemens, Wonderware.
- Experience in selecting, specifying, and designing installations for instrumentation, control valves, motors, VFDs, and drive systems.
- Proficiency in the National Electric Code (NEC) and ability to interpret and apply code requirements.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred.
- Strong background in electrical design for control panels, I/O systems, motor/VFD/motion/robotic controls, and Ethernet-based networks.
- Hands-on field experience troubleshooting industrial electrical control systems.
- Industry experience in sectors such as Food & Beverage, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Semiconductor, Water/Wastewater, Refining, Pulp & Paper, Oil & Gas, Power Generation, T&D, Material Handling, or Packaging.
