Chief Estimator - Columbus
Overview:
A leading mechanical contractor in Columbus is seeking a strategic and experienced Chief Estimator to lead its preconstruction and estimating operations. This is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all mechanical estimating activities, developing bid strategies, and ensuring the accuracy, competitiveness, and profitability of all proposals.
The ideal candidate will bring deep technical knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems, strong leadership capabilities, and a proven ability to manage high-performing teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and mentor a team of estimators, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and professional development
- Develop and implement estimating procedures, tools, and best practices
- Collaborate with executive leadership on go/no-go decisions, bid strategies, and risk assessments
- Represent the estimating department in executive meetings and strategic planning sessions
Preconstruction & Estimating
- Oversee the preparation of detailed cost estimates for HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems
- Review and approve all major bids and proposals before submission
- Ensure estimates reflect current market conditions, labor productivity, and material pricing
- Coordinate with engineering, operations, and procurement teams to align estimates with execution plans
Client & Vendor Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, interviews, and presentations as needed
- Support business development efforts by providing technical insight and pricing strategy

Required Experience & Qualifications:
- 10+ years of mechanical estimating experience, with at least 3-5 years in a senior or chief estimator role
- Deep understanding of mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, and process piping
- Proven ability to lead teams and manage multiple complex bids simultaneously
- Strong knowledge of Ohio construction market, labor rates, and subcontractor base
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines with precision
Preferred Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in estimating software such as Trimble, QuoteSoft, FastPIPE, or FastDUCT
- Strong skills in Bluebeam, Excel, and digital takeoff tools
- Familiarity with BIM/VDC workflows and preconstruction planning tools
- Experience with Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar platforms is a plus
