Position Summary
My client is seeking a Director of Strategic Accounts to drive new business growth within the Municipalities, Universities, Schools, and Hospitals (MUSH) vertical. This is a senior, direct sales role responsible for originating new opportunities, developing long-term relationships, and expanding market presence among public-sector and cooperative customers.
The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of the Southeast and Eastern U.S. energy markets and a deep understanding of how public institutions evaluate and make purchasing decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Originate new business across municipalities, electric cooperatives, higher-education institutions, school districts, and healthcare systems
- Build and manage a robust sales pipeline through proactive outreach, relationship development, and opportunity identification
- Advise clients on a comprehensive suite of energy services, including energy procurement, distributed generation, renewables, energy storage, grid infrastructure, load optimization, and regulatory insights
- Own the full sales cycle from discovery and solution design through proposal development, negotiation, and close
- Collaborate closely with internal engineering, regulatory, analytics, and operations teams to deliver custom solutions
- Establish trusted relationships with key decision-makers such as city managers, cooperative leadership, facilities directors, superintendents, and hospital executives
- Monitor market trends, regulatory changes, and competitive activity across assigned regions
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- 7-10+ years of experience selling to or advising municipalities, cooperatives, or public-sector clients within the energy space
- Strong understanding of both regulated and deregulated electricity markets
- Proven success in direct sales, business development, or complex solution selling
- Experience with distributed generation, renewable energy, storage, or grid infrastructure projects
- Existing network within the MUSH vertical
- Ability to generate opportunities outside of formal RFP processes
- Comfort navigating long sales cycles with multiple stakeholders
- Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
