Senior Electrical Engineer (Solar + BESS)
Location: Chicago-based team with national project reach
Step into a key engineering leadership role supporting the design, development, and execution of utility‑scale solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. You'll work closely with internal development and operations teams - as well as utilities, EPC partners, and Engineers of Record - to deliver high‑quality, code‑compliant designs that bring renewable energy projects from concept to construction.
What You'll Do
Lead Engineering & Design
- Own the development of 30% and IFP engineering plan sets: site layouts, one‑line diagrams, stringing plans, and equipment configurations.
- Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, UL, and local AHJ requirements.
- Develop and validate PV system calculations, cable sizing, grounding strategies, and OCPD design.
- Provide engineering support across the project life-cycle, from conceptual layouts to feasibility and cost‑reduction strategies.
Drive IFP & IFC Delivery
- Coordinate directly with EORs and utilities to deliver timely and accurate permit‑ and construction‑ready drawing packages.
- Review electrical studies (load flow, short‑circuit, coordination) and optimize designs accordingly.
- Ensure all deliverables align with AHJ, interconnection, and EPC partner requirements.
Advance BESS Integration & Equipment Selection
- Lead DC‑coupled and AC‑coupled BESS engineering, including inverter/battery configurations and protection coordination.
- Support selection of major electrical equipment: switchgear, reclosers, transformers, relays, GOABs, and communication systems.
- Collaborate with vendors and partners to maximize system performance and reliability.
Elevate Internal Processes
- Enhance engineering standards, templates, and QC processes.
- Identify opportunities to streamline design workflows and scale engineering capabilities.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering (Master's a plus)
- Active P.E. license with ability to stamp drawings in Illinois
- 4-7 years' experience in electrical engineering, ideally within solar + BESS
- Demonstrated ability to independently lead designs from concept through construction
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, ETAP, PVsyst, or related tools
- Strong communication, organization, and project management skills
- Passion for renewable energy and advancing the clean‑energy transition
