Highway/Roadway Superintendent - Central OH
Company Overview
We're currently working with a well-established Ohio-based civil contractor specializing in large-scale earthwork moving, mass excavation, site development, and underground utility & drainage installations and roadway construction projects.
Position Summary
As Superintendent, you'll be responsible for the execution of construction projects. You'll coordinate crews, subcontractors, equipment, materials, and schedules while upholding standards for safety, quality, and productivity. This leadership role is hands-on and field-focused, requiring proactive communication, disciplined planning, and the ability to build a collaborative, accountable jobsite culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct daily jobsite operations and supervise field crews, foremen, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Plan and schedule manpower, equipment, and materials to meet production goals and project deadlines.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, drawings, and quality standards.
- Maintain accurate project documentation (daily logs, production quantities, trucking/haul logs, production reports, punch lists).
- Coordinate inspections and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
- Communicate daily with Project Managers regarding progress, costs, and schedules.
- Set clear performance expectations and provide direction and feedback to foremen and crews.
- Support efficient field layout and verification (e.g., survey controls, grade checks, GPS-enabled equipment where applicable).
- Lead onsite safety culture and enforce all safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct weekly safety meetings
- Assign, implement, and oversee SWPPP compliance, erosion/sediment controls, and BMPs.
- Serve as the primary onsite representative with clients, inspectors, and vendors.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong leadership and field management experience in heavy civil construction.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and schedules.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and real-time decision-making abilities.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and civil construction best practices.
- Experience with construction software (e.g., HeavyJob, Microsoft Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to travel to various jobsites and work in varying weather conditions.
- Minimum 5 years of heavy civil/roadway construction experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
Education & Experience
- Associate degree in Construction Management, completed apprenticeship or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
- OSHA 30 or willingness to obtain within a set timeframe).
- Experience with estimating, production tracking, and cost control is a plus.
