Lead Estimator, Mechanical
Overview
An established mechanical contractor in Western Massachusetts is seeking a Lead Estimator to take ownership of preconstruction efforts across commercial HVAC and plumbing projects.
This is a key leadership position within the business, responsible for driving estimating strategy, leading major pursuits, and partnering closely with operations and executive leadership to secure profitable work.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the full estimating process for commercial HVAC and plumbing projects from concept through bid submission
- Prepare accurate, competitive cost estimates across conceptual, DD, and hard-bid stages
- Review drawings, specifications, and scopes to develop detailed takeoffs and pricing strategies
- Manage and mentor junior estimators; help build and standardise estimating processes
- Lead bid strategy, risk analysis, and value engineering efforts to improve win rates
- Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and clients to ensure competitive pricing
- Partner with project management and field leadership to ensure smooth handoff post-award
- Support client interactions during preconstruction, including presentations and scope alignment
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in mechanical (HVAC/plumbing) estimating within commercial construction
- Proven experience leading estimates on mid-to-large scale projects ($5M+)
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, installation methods, and labour productivity
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
- Experience in design-build and negotiated work environments preferred
- Demonstrated leadership or mentorship experience within estimating teams
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage both internal teams and external clients
