Mid Level SCADA/PLC Programmer
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced automation engineer to lead the design, configuration, and implementation of control systems used in water and wastewater treatment facilities. This role involves developing and maintaining PLC and SCADA systems to ensure optimal plant performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and implement automation systems for municipal and industrial water treatment applications, including PLCs and SCADA platforms.
Program and troubleshoot programmable logic controllers (PLCs) from manufacturers such as Allen Bradley, Siemens, and Schneider Electric.
Develop user interfaces using HMI software to support operational control, including visualization, alarm handling, and trend monitoring.
Enhance and maintain existing automation systems to ensure consistent, high-performance operation across various facilities.
Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to integrate automation with mechanical, electrical, and process design.
Conduct system simulations, on-site testing, and startup commissioning to validate performance and functionality.
Identify, diagnose, and resolve automation issues, providing field support and technical assistance as needed.
Participate in commissioning activities, ensuring automation systems meet design and operational expectations.
Prepare and maintain detailed documentation, such as wiring diagrams, control logic, and HMI configurations.
Stay informed on current automation trends and tools to introduce continuous improvements and system innovations.
Required Experience and Skills:
5-10 years of experience in industrial control system programming, particularly in water/wastewater or similar process environments.
Expertise with PLC programming (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens, Schneider) and knowledge of common industrial protocols like Modbus, Ethernet/IP, or Profibus.
Familiarity with SCADA platforms such as Ignition, GE iFix, Wonderware, or comparable systems.
Competency in HMI development, including real-time monitoring, user interface design, and alarm integration.
Solid understanding of instrumentation, control systems engineering, and troubleshooting.
Knowledge of networking and industrial communication technologies (e.g., OPC, TCP/IP).
Experience working with field equipment such as VFDs, sensors, and control devices.
Ability to read technical drawings and P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams).
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to conduct detailed root cause analysis.
Proficient in creating technical documentation, reports, and operational guides.
Effective verbal and written communication skills to support cross-functional collaboration.
Flexibility to travel for system installation, testing, and support at job sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced familiarity with automation protocols like Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3, A/B Ethernet IP, MQTT, and Profibus.
Bachelor's degree in automation, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a similar field.
Professional certifications such as ISA CAP (Certified Automation Professional) or equivalent credentials are advantageous.
