Project Manager - Large-Scale Agroforestry (Indonesia)

Project Manager - Large-Scale Agroforestry (Indonesia)

Location: Sulawesi (Manado / Makassar, with regional travel)

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity to take ownership of a large-scale, nature-based project in Southeast Asia. This role sits at the forefront of ecosystem restoration, combining commercial delivery with long-term environmental impact.

You'll be responsible for leading a multi-year agroforestry initiative from scale-up through to ongoing operations. This is not a passive oversight role - you'll act as the central driver of execution, working across partners, communities, and stakeholders to ensure delivery on the ground.

If you're someone who thrives in complex, high-impact environments and enjoys building something tangible at scale, this is a rare mandate.

The Project

  • Landscape-scale agroforestry programme spanning thousands of hectares
  • Focus on mixed-species planting and sustainable land use (not monoculture)
  • Delivery through a network of smallholder farmers, partners, and landowners
  • Integration of long-term commercial value chains alongside environmental restoration

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Delivery

  • Lead end-to-end planning, execution, and scale-up of the project
  • Develop detailed workplans, milestones, and performance tracking systems
  • Ensure delivery remains on schedule despite real-world constraints (weather, supply, labour)

Stakeholder & Partner Management

  • Coordinate NGOs, implementation partners, landowners, and government stakeholders
  • Align multiple parties towards a single execution roadmap
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships across local ecosystems

Commercial & Financial Oversight

  • Own project budgets, track spend vs. plan, and manage financial risks
  • Oversee contract negotiations and ensure key deliverables are met

Risk & Governance

  • Identify risks early and put mitigation strategies in place
  • Establish reporting frameworks, dashboards, and decision-making visibility for leadership

On-the-Ground Execution

  • Drive implementation via partners while maintaining accountability for outcomes
  • Step in where needed to unblock challenges and maintain momentum

Monitoring & Impact

  • Track progress against KPIs and physical delivery targets
  • Support impact measurement, reporting, and optimisation of project performance

What We're Looking For

  • ~10+ years' experience in project management, including leadership responsibility
  • Background in agroforestry, forestry, agriculture, or large-scale land-based projects
(open to infrastructure, renewables, or similar complex field-based environments)
  • Proven experience managing large budgets and multi-stakeholder programmes
  • Strong track record of delivering through partners rather than direct teams
  • Experience working with smallholder farmers or rural communities is highly advantageous
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and ability to operate in dynamic, on-the-ground environments
  • Fluent English; Bahasa Indonesia strongly preferred

Why This Role

  • Ownership of a flagship, multi-year environmental project
  • Direct exposure to senior leadership and decision-making
  • Opportunity to create lasting environmental and community impact
  • Clear pathway to expand into broader regional or multi-project leadership

Ideal Profile

You're someone who:

  • Enjoys operating close to execution rather than purely strategic roles
  • Is comfortable navigating ambiguity and solving problems in real time
  • Can influence without direct control and align diverse stakeholders
  • Is motivated by building something meaningful, not just managing it
