Senior Substation Electrical Engineer

The Opportunity

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Serve as a technical specialist or project lead, providing coordination, guidance, and expertise on substation projects
  • Support a range of substation projects (up to EHV levels) across detailed design and full project lifecycle delivery (including EPC environments)
  • Develop protection & control design deliverables, including relay schemes, panel layouts, one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Produce physical design deliverables such as yard layouts, grounding systems, lightning protection, control building arrangements, and auxiliary power systems
  • Perform engineering calculations and prepare technical reports (e.g., grounding, AC/DC load, lightning protection)
  • Conduct or oversee QA/QC reviews of substation design packages
  • Develop equipment specifications and bills of materials for procurement and construction
  • Coordinate with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and internal teams across multiple disciplines
  • Mentor junior engineers and support team development
  • Present technical designs, proposals, and project updates
  • Travel as needed for client meetings, site visits, and field verification
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables
  • Support business development and proposal efforts

This role sits within a high-performing engineering group focused on power delivery and grid infrastructure supporting rapidly growing sectors such as advanced manufacturing, data centers, and emerging energy technologies.

The team delivers full life-cycle services (engineering through construction) across areas including:

  • Substations
  • Renewable energy integration
  • HVDC, FACTS, and reactive power systems
  • Data center infrastructure support
  • Battery energy storage integration

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance around engineering standards, codes, and best practices
  • Ensure adherence to quality programs and drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Lead preparation of complex engineering deliverable for large-scale projects
  • Perform advanced engineering calculations and develop technical solutions to complex challenges
  • Manage project scope, budgets, schedules, and quality expectations
  • Coordinate across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
  • Identify client drivers and ensure project execution aligns with expectations
  • Support client relationship development and future business opportunities
  • Act as a subject matter expert in specialized technical areas
  • Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers, contributing to team growth and succession planning

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading or serving as a technical specialist on utility substation projects
  • Strong background in QA/QC processes
  • High-voltage substation design experience (physical and/or protection & control)
  • Experience in a consulting or EPC environment
  • Proven ability to coordinate with clients, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • Proficiency in design and documentation tools (e.g., Bluebeam, Microsoft Office Suite)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution
  • ~10+ years of relevant experience in substation or power delivery engineering
  • Ability to meet standard pre-employment requirements in compliance with applicable regulations
