Substation Project Manager
We are seeking a skilled Substation Project Manager with a strong background in both Protection & Control (P&C) and Physical Substation Design. This position is 100% fully remote, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere within the U.S. while leading impactful, utility‑grade engineering projects.
This role is ideal for an engineer‑turned‑PM or an experienced PM who brings deep technical understanding of substation systems, strong coordination skills, and the ability to drive projects to completion with high quality and precision.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Execution
- Lead end‑to‑end delivery of substation engineering projects (new builds, expansions, retrofits).
- Develop and manage project budgets, schedules, scopes, resources, risks, and documentation.
- Serve as the main client-facing liaison, ensuring alignment, communication, and successful outcomes.
Technical Leadership
- Provide oversight and direction for P&C and Physical designdeliverables, including:
- One‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, wiring diagrams
- Physical layouts, grounding plans, equipment arrangements
- Protection schemes, logic diagrams, I/O lists
- Review or support relay settings and coordination studies (preferred).
- Ensure all deliverables meet applicable codes and standards (NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, utility specs).
Cross‑Discipline Collaboration
- Coordinate effectively with P&C engineers, physical designers, civil/structural teams, project controls, and field personnel.
- Lead internal/external design review meetings and track action items to completion.
- Ensure high-quality, accurate, and timely project documentation.
Construction & Field Support
- Provide engineering input during procurement, construction, commissioning, and energization phases.
- Respond to RFIs, support resolution of field issues, verify design intent, and approve revisions as needed.
Required Qualifications
- BSEE or related engineering degree.
- 5+ years of substation engineering experience (P&C and/or Physical).
- Strong understanding of relaying, protection schemes, and substation equipment.
- Prior project management or technical lead experience.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or MicroStation; familiarity with utility standards.
- Excellent communication, organization, and client interaction skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience performing or reviewing relay settings.
- PE license or ability to obtain within 12 months.
- Experience with EPCs or utilities.
- Prior leadership or mentorship experience.
