Position Summary

The Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) will play a pivotal role in managing and executing a variety of land surveying projects, including boundary surveys, topographic mapping, monumentation, and right-of-way determinations. This position requires a blend of technical proficiency, leadership ability, and client engagement skills.

As a PLS, you will lead a team of office-based survey professionals, oversee project workflows, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and contribute to the strategic growth of our operations. You will also serve as a mentor to junior staff, fostering a culture of learning, accountability, and excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management and Execution

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of land surveying projects from inception to completion.
  • Conduct and oversee boundary surveys, topographic surveys, monumentation, and right-of-way surveys.
  • Ensure that all project deliverables meet or exceed client expectations, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and implement project schedules, budgets, and quality control measures.
  • Utilize advanced surveying technologies, including GPS, total stations, and data collection software, to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

Team Leadership and Mentorship

  • Supervise and mentor a team of office-based survey technicians and support staff.
  • Provide training, guidance, and performance feedback to promote professional development and team cohesion.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Delegate tasks effectively and ensure that team members are equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed.

Technical Analysis and Reporting

  • Perform complex calculations and data analysis to support survey findings and project decisions.
  • Prepare detailed survey reports, maps, legal descriptions, and other documentation for clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Review and approve survey deliverables to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Maintain organized project records and documentation for internal and external audits.

Regulatory Compliance and Standards

  • Stay current with state and local surveying laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Ensure that all surveying activities are conducted in accordance with the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists (BPELSG) guidelines.
  • Coordinate with legal, engineering, and planning professionals to address regulatory and permitting requirements.
  • Participate in professional organizations and continuing education to maintain licensure and industry knowledge.

Client and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for project-related inquiries, updates, and issue resolution.
  • Represent the firm in meetings, presentations, and public forums as needed.
  • Identify opportunities for new business and contribute to proposal development and marketing efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in the state of California is strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with LSIT (Land Surveyor in Training) certification and relevant experience are also encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in land surveying, with a focus on boundary, topographic, monumentation, and right-of-way projects.
  • Proficiency in using surveying instruments and software, including GPS, total stations, Auto-CAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, and related tools.
  • Strong understanding of California land use laws, subdivision regulations, and public land survey systems.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Valid California driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience working with public agencies such as Caltrans, local municipalities, and utility providers.
  • Familiarity with drone surveying, LiDAR, and other emerging geospatial technologies.
  • Demonstrated success in business development, client management, or proposal writing.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is a plus.
