Technical Estimator - Automation & Controls
Senior Technical Estimator - Automation & Controls
We're partnering with a rapidly expanding engineering consultancy delivering automation and digital transformation solutions across industrial environments. Due to continued growth, they're looking to add an experienced technical estimator to strengthen their front-end project development capability.
This position sits at the intersection of engineering and commercial delivery, playing a key role in shaping project scope, cost, and overall solution strategy before execution.
What you'll be responsible for
- Building detailed, client-focused proposals for automation and controls projects
- Translating technical requirements into clear scopes, budgets, and delivery plans
- Working closely with sales, engineering, and project teams to align solutions with client expectations
- Producing accurate cost models covering labour, materials, and third-party services
- Reviewing specifications, drawings, and system requirements to define project approach
- Assessing feasibility of control systems, integration strategies, and overall architecture
- Supporting bid timelines and ensuring submissions are delivered on schedule
- Presenting estimates and technical proposals internally and, where needed, to clients
- Maintaining and improving internal pricing tools, templates, and historical cost data
- Helping standardise best practices across estimating and proposal generation
What they're looking for
- Background in industrial automation, controls, or systems integration
- Experience working with technologies such as PLCs, SCADA, DCS (e.g. Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider, etc.)
- Prior exposure to estimating, proposals, or pre-sales engineering (or a strong interest in moving into this space)
- Solid understanding of how automation projects are scoped, designed, and delivered
- Ability to break down complex technical problems into practical, costed solutions
- Strong attention to detail, particularly when working across multiple bids at once
- Comfortable working cross-functionally and communicating with both technical and commercial stakeholders
Nice to have (but not essential)
- Experience within water/wastewater or municipal infrastructure projects
- Familiarity with estimating or takeoff tools (or advanced Excel modelling)
- Exposure to improving processes through automation, scripting, or AI tools
Why consider it
- Fully remote position with occasional travel (~25%)
- Opportunity to move away from pure delivery into a more strategic, front-end role
- Stable pipeline of projects across varied industrial sectors
- Smaller, agile environment with less bureaucracy than large integrators
- Clear opportunity to influence how projects are shaped from the outset
- Strong long-term growth as the business continues to scale
