Design Engineer - Building Automation & HVAC Controls

About the Role

We are seeking a Design Engineer based in Ohio to support the design and development of building automation and HVAC control systems across commercial and light industrial projects.

This role is responsible for delivering high-quality engineering documentation, including control system designs, system architecture diagrams, and submittal packages. The ideal candidate has experience in BAS design, is detail-oriented, and can work collaboratively with project managers, programmers, and field teams to ensure projects are delivered accurately and efficiently.


Key Responsibilities

Engineering Design & Documentation

  • Develop building automation and HVAC control system designs using DDC and/or PLC-based platforms.
  • Create system architecture diagrams, control flow diagrams, and network layouts using tools such as Microsoft Visio.
  • Produce control schematics, wiring diagrams, and points lists aligned with project requirements.
  • Interpret mechanical and electrical drawings to develop complete and coordinated control designs.
  • Assist in the selection of controllers, sensors, actuators, and other field devices.

Submittals & Project Deliverables

  • Develop, compile, and manage submittal packages, including product data, control narratives, and system descriptions.
  • Review submittals for compliance with project specifications and client expectations.
  • Address submittal comments and coordinate revisions with internal teams and vendors.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for project deliverables and support as-built documentation at closeout.

Project Coordination & Support

  • Collaborate with project managers to ensure deliverables meet schedule and budget targets.
  • Support field and commissioning teams by clarifying design intent and resolving technical questions.
  • Participate in design reviews, coordination meetings, and internal QC processes.
  • Assist with RFI responses and technical problem solving during project execution.

Standards & Continuous Improvement

  • Follow internal standards and best practices for design, documentation, and quality.
  • Support the development of templates, workflows, and design standards.
  • Stay current with BAS technologies, tools, and industry trends.

Qualifications

  • 2-5+ years of experience in building automation, HVAC controls design, or related engineering role.
  • Experience using Microsoft Visio for system diagrams and control system layouts.
  • Proven experience developing and managing submittals for controls or HVAC projects.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems and control strategies.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings.
  • Familiarity with BAS systems and communication protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AutoCAD or Revit for controls design documentation.
  • Familiarity with BAS platforms (e.g., Niagara/Tridium, Distech, Siemens, Johnson Controls, Allerton, etc.).
  • Exposure to field installation, commissioning, or system startup activities.
  • Understanding of control panel design and basic electrical principles.

Work Location & Travel

  • Must be based in Ohio (Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, or surrounding areas).
  • Primarily office or hybrid-based role with occasional site visits.
  • Limited travel may be required to support project coordination or field activities.
