GIS Specialist

The GIS Specialist provides geospatial and graphic design services for the organization's utility operations and related subsidiaries. This role supports both the GIS platform and Corporate Communications functions. The work environment is dynamic, requiring agility, strong communication, and the ability to maintain high-quality outputs as the company continues to expand.
The GIS Specialist collaborates closely with team members across the organization, with a direct reporting relationship to the VP of Operations. Responsibilities span a wide range of geospatial tasks, including maintaining existing datasets, supporting new utility developments, managing digital assets, and contributing to business development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Preparing maps and visual materials for business development, regulatory filings, planning efforts, acquisitions, board presentations, and system expansions.
- Digitizing and updating water and wastewater infrastructure, including entering and maintaining utility attribution and connection counts in internal tracking systems.
- Acquiring, integrating, and standardizing external datasets to update and enhance internal GIS layers, including developing processes for data refresh cycles.
- Using data‑driven GIS functionality to automate and streamline map creation, data exports, and spatial analyses.
- Managing and updating the company's web‑based GIS applications, including adding and maintaining data layers and supporting internal development tracking tools.
- Maintaining photo libraries, GIS data libraries, parcel and ownership datasets, logos, and other digital assets, including responsibilities within the organization's digital asset management system.
- Creating presentations, Word documents, Visio diagrams, and Excel files in support of internal and external communications.
- Working directly with Operations and Communications leadership to support and evolve the Corporate Communications and GIS Strategic Plan.
- Conducting QA/QC to ensure deliverables meet internal quality standards and comply with state, local, and client requirements.
- Supporting and promoting a safety‑focused culture through adherence to company safety protocols.
- Completing ad hoc projects and additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
The Essentials:
- 5+ years of experience in geospatial analysis, including proficiency with ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Pro.
- 5+ years of experience working with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
The Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in Geography, Graphic Design, GIS, or a related field.
- Advanced certifications or post‑baccalaureate training in GIS, cartography, or graphic design.
- Experience with ArcGIS Online, including creation and maintenance of web maps, dashboards, and story maps.
- Experience using Trimble Maintain or similar asset management software.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop).
- Experience working with utility systems or infrastructure‑related data management.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to develop presentations and recommendations for leadership teams.
