High Voltage Engineer

Role Overview

An engineering organization is seeking a High Voltage / Substation Engineer to support the planning, design, and delivery of high‑voltage substations and grid infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on renewable energy and large‑scale interconnections. This role will contribute across the full project lifecycle-from early‑stage engineering through construction support-ensuring safe, compliant, and reliable system performance.

Core Responsibilities

  • Substation Engineering & Design
Develop physical and electrical designs for high‑voltage substations, including equipment layouts, one‑line diagrams, and technical drawings using industry‑standard CAD tools.

  • High‑Voltage Power Systems
Design and evaluate transmission and substation systems operating at 69kV and above, ensuring alignment with utility practices and applicable standards.

  • Interconnection & Utility Coordination
Support grid interconnection efforts for renewable generation and energy infrastructure, collaborating with utilities and system operators to meet technical requirements.

  • Equipment Selection & Specifications
Specify high‑voltage equipment such as power transformers, breakers, switchgear, relays, and auxiliary systems, coordinating with vendors and project teams.

  • Power System Studies & Analysis
Perform or support load flow, short‑circuit, and protection coordination studies using common power system analysis tools.

  • Construction & Commissioning Support
Provide engineering support during construction, testing, commissioning, and energization, resolving design and field issues as they arise.

  • Codes, Standards & Compliance
Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, utility criteria, and regulatory requirements.

  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Work closely with project managers, civil/structural engineers, and external stakeholders to align engineering deliverables with project schedules and objectives.

  • Documentation & Reporting
Prepare technical documentation including design packages, reports, and as‑built drawings for internal and external use.

Required Qualifications

  • Education
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Professional Experience
Typically 3-7 years of experience in substation engineering, high‑voltage systems, or power delivery projects.
Exposure to renewable energy or interconnection projects is strongly preferred.

  • Technical Expertise

    • Experience with substation design tools and power system analysis software
    • Working knowledge of high‑voltage equipment and protection concepts
    • Familiarity with IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility standards
  • Licensure
Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one.

Preferred Experience

  • Utility‑scale solar, wind, or energy storage projects
  • Substation automation, protection & control, or SCADA exposure
  • Experience supporting BESS or inverter‑based resources at the transmission level

Additional Information

  • Occasional travel to project sites may be required
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail are essential
