Project Engineering Manager - Power Generation
The Manager of Project Engineering leads a multidisciplinary team-including field engineers, quantity surveyors, and project controls personnel-to support the successful delivery of construction projects. This role provides critical support to construction and project management teams by guiding field execution, managing project risks, and ensuring technical and procedural alignment across all phases of work.
Key Responsibilities
Project Controls & Engineering Leadership
- Direct all project controls reporting and ensure accurate, timely documentation.
- Lead the development and administration of change orders.
- Oversee project risk identification, tracking, and mitigation activities.
- Coordinate with equipment manufacturers and technical suppliers for engineered materials and systems.
- Develop work packages, scopes, and procurement specifications.
- Manage all field engineering functions and resolve technical issues as they arise.
- Support estimating efforts, subcontract management, and ongoing procurement activities.
- Ensure all deliverables meet project requirements, specifications, and scheduling needs.
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise, mentor, and guide field engineering staff, including performance reviews and ongoing development.
- Build team capability by training and developing staff for future project management opportunities.
- Delegate responsibilities efficiently, ensuring optimal use of team skills and resources.
- Foster a supportive, collaborative environment focused on teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Provide engineering and coordination support to project teams through all project phases.
Project Planning & Coordination
- Partner with project managers and stakeholders to develop engineering strategies, schedules, and execution plans.
- Collaborate across design, procurement, and construction teams to ensure coordinated project delivery.
- Review and interpret specifications, drawings, and technical documentation to support field and engineering activities.
- Guide project controls teams in preparing progress reports and quantity tracking.
- Support preconstruction efforts, including proposal reviews and the development of technical input for bids.
Technical Expertise
- Bring deep knowledge of industrial construction methods, equipment, and processes to support troubleshooting and field execution.
- Lead engineering-of-record activities, including review of calculations, design documents, and construction drawings for compliance with codes and standards.
- Solve complex technical issues and develop innovative, efficient solutions to improve project performance.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to departmental processes, quality standards, and applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Implement quality control processes to evaluate engineering performance and project deliverables.
- Conduct site visits and inspections to monitor progress, identify risks, and validate compliance with project expectations.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal partners.
- Communicate regularly with stakeholders to provide updates, address concerns, and manage expectations.
- Engage with clients and partners to clarify project requirements, resolve issues, and support overall satisfaction.
Qualifications
Experience & Skills
- Proven leadership experience managing engineering or technical project teams.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- In-depth understanding of industrial construction practices, regulations, and industry standards.
- Proficiency with construction management software and project management tools; working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar design platforms.
- Strong analytical, decision‑making, and problem‑solving capabilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for coordinating with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and precision.
Preferred Project Experience
- Experience in power generation, oil & gas, chemicals, or similar industrial construction sectors.
- Additional experience in pulp & paper or heavy industrial projects is an asset.
- Project portfolio including scopes ranging from $5M to $100M+ with substantial subcontractor coordination.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management (advanced degrees preferred).
- 10+ years of progressive experience in construction, with a strong background in field engineering and project management.
