Senior Traffic Engineer

A well-established engineering consultancy is seeking a Traffic Project Engineer II to join its transportation team in western Pennsylvania. The position is based in one of several regional offices and offers a dynamic, fast-paced, and collaborative work environment. The ideal candidate will be a proactive team contributor with the ability to independently lead complex traffic engineering tasks, either directly or through oversight of others.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and review of traffic-related technical documentation, including reports, design plans, calculations, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Perform traffic modeling and analysis using tools such as Highway Capacity Software and Synchro/SimTraffic.
  • Design traffic signals, signage, pavement markings, and traffic control plans (Maintenance and Protection of Traffic).
  • May act as a Task Manager on smaller-scale projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience.
  • PTOE certification preferred.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with MicroStation required; OpenRoads Designer experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with PennDOT, PA Turnpike, and MUTCD standards; experience in Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh is advantageous.

  • Stays current with industry developments and integrates new practices where appropriate.
  • Leads moderately complex projects or major project components.
  • Demonstrates sound ethical judgment and decision-making.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license with reciprocity in multiple states.
  • Valid driver's license.

Technical & Management Duties

  • Serves as a technical advisor in specialized areas.
  • Develops innovative techniques and improves existing processes.
  • Manages engineering teams and coordinates documentation for multiple major projects.
  • Applies risk management strategies to project delivery.
  • Mentors senior staff and fosters a culture of creativity, flexibility, and professionalism.
