Job Posting: System Operator - Transmission Operations
A regional electric transmission organization is seeking a System Operator to join its team at a control center located in northeast Missouri. This cooperative utility serves portions of Missouri and Iowa, ensuring reliable power delivery across its service territory.
This is an hourly role requiring residency within approximately 45 minutes of the operations center. The control room operates 24/7, and the position involves working in a secure, enclosed environment. Applicants must be available for rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency coverage. Selected candidates will be required to obtain a NERC System Operator Certification and complete a structured training program.
Applicants without prior experience may be considered for an apprenticeship track, which may last up to five years depending on qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

As a System Operator, you will manage real-time operations of the electric transmission grid using SCADA systems, overseeing voltages ranging from 12.5 kV to 345 kV. You will coordinate with field crews to ensure safe and efficient system performance under both routine and emergency conditions. Duties include:
  • Monitoring and controlling transmission assets via SCADA
  • Executing switching procedures, outage coordination, and safety protocols
  • Establishing protection zones and issuing operational directives
  • Conducting system studies to maintain grid reliability
  • Documenting system events, outages, and environmental/security checks
  • Handling after-hours service calls and dispatching personnel
  • Responding to emergency situations such as environmental incidents or security alerts

Ideal Candidate Profile

We're looking for a detail-oriented professional with strong analytical and communication skills who thrives in a high-stakes, 24/7 operational setting. A solid understanding of electrical systems and proficiency with technology are essential.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in electrical engineering or related field preferred
  • NERC Reliability or Transmission Operator Certification (or ability to obtain within one year)
  • Five years of relevant experience preferred, or completion of an internal apprenticeship program
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, voltage regulation, and outage management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong decision-making, multitasking, and crisis management abilities
