Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Resident Engineer to oversee transportation construction projects throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. This individual will serve as the primary on-site representative, responsible for managing construction administration activities, coordinating stakeholders, and leading project teams to ensure successful project delivery.
The ideal candidate will bring strong transportation construction experience, leadership skills, and a thorough understanding of public agency construction requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Engineer-in-Charge and primary client representative for roadway, bridge, and transportation construction projects.
- Manage construction contract administration activities, including pay estimates, change orders, contract modifications, project documentation, and compliance requirements.
- Lead project coordination efforts between contractors, owners, utility companies, design teams, public agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Supervise and mentor construction engineering and inspection staff, ensuring quality project execution and professional development.
- Monitor project schedules, budgets, construction progress, and contractor performance to drive successful project delivery.
- Lead project meetings, stakeholder coordination discussions, and issue-resolution efforts throughout construction.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, quality standards, safety requirements, maintenance of traffic plans, and applicable agency regulations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related field
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Illinois.
- 10+ years of transportation construction engineering, construction management, or CEI experience.
- Previous experience serving in a leadership role such as Resident Engineer, Assistant Resident Engineer, or Construction Manager.
- Extensive experience administering roadway, bridge, highway, and transportation infrastructure construction projects.
- Strong knowledge of transportation construction standards, specifications, documentation requirements, and contract administration procedures.
- Proven experience managing construction contracts, schedules, quantities, change orders, claims, and project documentation.
- Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license with the ability to travel throughout the Chicago area.
- Experience with construction management and project documentation platforms is preferred.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working on projects for state DOTs, toll authorities, municipalities, or other public-sector transportation agencies.
- Background managing complex transportation construction projects involving multiple stakeholders and utility coordination.
- Familiarity with federally funded transportation projects and associated compliance requirements.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary inspection and construction management teams.
