Data Scientist - Infrastructure & Transport Analytics

Location: Sydney | Melbourne | Other Australian locations considered (hybrid)

About the organisation

Our client is a globally active infrastructure owner and operator, managing a portfolio of long‑life transport assets across international markets. The organisation is well‑established, financially stable, and operates with a strong focus on data‑driven decision making, disciplined asset management, and long‑term value creation.

This is an environment where analytics plays a central role in strategic and commercial decision‑making, rather than a purely reporting function.

About the role

As a Data Scientist, you will join a central Forecasting & Analytics function supporting senior stakeholders across the business. The role focuses on building and applying quantitative models to understand demand, traffic behaviour, revenue and scenario outcomes across complex, real‑world infrastructure assets.

You will work across the end‑to‑end analytics lifecycle - from problem definition and data management through to modelling, insight generation and communication. This is a highly applied role where your work directly informs commercial, operational and strategic decisions.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain quantitative, statistical and forecasting models to analyse demand, traffic and revenue behaviour
  • Perform scenario analysis, sensitivity testing and simulations to support investment and strategic decisions
  • Translate complex business questions into structured analytical approaches
  • Manage, interrogate and validate large datasets from multiple sources
  • Present insights clearly to non‑technical and senior stakeholders
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of analytical tools, methodologies and capability across the team

About you

You are a commercially minded data scientist who enjoys working on complex, applied problems with real‑world impact.

Required experience:

  • Bachelor's or postgraduate qualification in data science, economics, engineering, statistics or a related field
  • Strong experience in data science, analytics or quantitative modelling within a commercial environment
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, with solid SQL capability
  • Experience with forecasting, regression, simulation, scenario analysis or similar techniques
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non‑technical stakeholders

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Experience in transport, infrastructure, utilities, aviation, economics or regulated industries
  • Exposure to data visualisation tools such as Power BI
  • Background in consulting or advisory environments

Why consider this role

  • Work on large‑scale, real‑world infrastructure assets with genuine long‑term impact
  • Join a high‑calibre analytics team where data influences senior decision‑making
  • Strong balance of technical depth and commercial exposure
  • Stable organisation with a long‑term investment outlook
  • Flexible working arrangements with multiple Australian locations considered
