A well-established general contractor is seeking a Heavy Civil Estimator to support bidding and preconstruction efforts on infrastructure projects throughout Montana and the surrounding region. This role is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive estimates for heavy civil work including earthwork, utilities, roadway, structures, and public works projects.


Position Overview

The Heavy Civil Estimator will lead or support the full estimating lifecycle-from initial document review through bid submission and handoff to operations. This position requires a strong understanding of production-based estimating, risk assessment, and the ability to collaborate closely with operations, project management, subcontractors, and vendors.


Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for heavy civil projects including earthwork, grading, underground utilities, drainage, roadway, and site concrete.
  • Review plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and contract documents to identify scope, risks, and pricing strategies.
  • Solicit, analyze, and level subcontractor and supplier pricing.
  • Develop labor, equipment, and material pricing using historical data and production rates.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as required.
  • Participate in bid reviews and support project handoff to operations after award.

Experience Needed

  • 3-7+ years of experience in heavy civil construction estimating.
  • Experience estimating heavy civil scopes such as mass excavation, utilities, drainage, roadwork, and public infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with public works and/or municipal bidding is preferred.

Qualifications Needed

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or equivalent field experience.
  • Proficiency with estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid, Agtek, PlanSwift, or Bluebeam.
  • Strong understanding of production-based estimating and cost control.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, and schedules.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
