Interconnection Planning Engineer
We are actively seeking experienced Power Systems Engineers to support a range of transmission system studies. Candidates should hold at least a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, with advanced degrees (Master's or Ph.D.) in Power Systems preferred. Relocation assistance can be available.
Location Requirements:
- Junior-level candidates must be available to work onsite in Calgary, Alberta.
- Senior-level candidates may be considered for remote work.
Role Overview
As an Interconnection Planning Engineer, you will contribute to the analysis and modeling of high-voltage transmission systems. Your responsibilities will include:
- Performing power flow, voltage stability, transient stability, and short-circuit studies.
- Developing steady-state, dynamic, and fault models.
- Assisting senior engineers in drafting technical documentation and reports.
- Providing technical guidance on generator interconnection processes throughout the planning lifecycle.
- Conducting system impact assessments, including load flow and stability evaluations, reactive planning, and mitigation strategies.
- Utilizing tools such as PSS/E and TARA for voltage ride-through and critical clearing time analyses, particularly for renewable energy integration.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in power system analysis using tools like PSS/E, TSAT, or PSLF.
Preferred Experience:
- Stability studies using PSS/E.
- Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations using PSCAD or EMTP.
- Congestion and cost modeling studies across ISOs such as MISO, CAISO, PJM, or SPP.
- Strong understanding of power system components including synchronous generators, motors, inverters, wind turbines, and solar technologies.
- Familiarity with transmission planning software (e.g., TARA, DigSILENT, DSA Tools).
- Experience in modeling advanced components like HVDC systems, STATCOMs, and SVCs.
- Programming skills in IPLAN or Python for model development.
- Knowledge of transmission reliability standards and interconnection processes.
- Basic understanding of substation design and protection systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
