Remote Building Automation Engineer (Design)

We are seeking a highly skilled Remote Building Automation Engineer to design, program, integrate, troubleshoot, and support Building Automation Systems (BAS) across diverse facilities and mission‑critical environments.
This role is ideal for a self‑directed engineer who excels in remote collaboration, technical problem‑solving, and delivering high‑quality automation solutions.


Key Responsibilities

1. BAS System Design & Engineering

  • Design and program BAS/DDC/PLC‑based control systems for HVAC, electrical, and mechanical equipment.
  • Develop network and system architectures (IT/OT), including addressing, VLANs, and secure interfaces.
  • Create engineering documentation such as control schematics, sequences of operation, and project specifications.

2. Remote Technical Support & Troubleshooting

  • Monitor system performance and diagnose issues using BAS dashboards and remote access tools.
  • Support field technicians with testing, validation, and commissioning activities.
  • Provide corrective actions, firmware updates, tuning, and optimization for BAS and integrated systems.

3. Project Collaboration

  • Collaborate with design engineers, contractors, vendors, and clients throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Participate in design reviews, quality control checks, and submittal review processes.
  • Support estimating, proposals, and technical documentation for project development.

4. Documentation & Reporting

  • Develop and maintain system documentation, test reports, commissioning logs, and as‑built markups.
  • Communicate project progress clearly to stakeholders through reports and regular updates.

5. Continuous Improvement & Training

  • Stay up‑to‑date with emerging BAS technologies, smart building trends, and IoT solutions.
  • Provide training or guidance to clients or internal teams on system operation and best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction, or related discipline OR equivalent hands‑on controls experience.
  • 5-8+ years of experience in BAS design, programming, installation, commissioning, or troubleshooting.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • HVAC control strategies and mechanical systems
    • BAS platforms (e.g., Tridium Niagara, Distech, Alerton, Johnson Controls, etc.)
    • Communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, SNMP
    • Networking concepts (LAN/WAN, switches, routers, VLANs)
  • Proficiency with MS Office and engineering software (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.).

Soft Skills

  • Excellent remote communication and collaboration skills.
  • Highly organized, self‑motivated, and comfortable working independently.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working in data centers, hyperscale facilities, or other mission‑critical environments.
  • Field commissioning or startup experience with HVAC/BAS systems.
  • Exposure to IoT, smart building technologies, or energy management platforms.

Working Conditions

  • Fully remote role requiring a dedicated, distraction‑free workspace.
  • Occasional travel (10-20%) for site visits, system evaluations, or commissioning as needed.
