Position Summary

The Senior Energy Engineer leads engineering analyses and technical delivery for energy retrofit and consulting initiatives across a diverse portfolio of clients and industries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply deep expertise in building systems and operational strategies to uncover opportunities for efficiency improvements, resiliency enhancements, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Conduct evaluations of Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) and partner with cross-functional teams to support projects from initial concept through development.
  • Plan and execute various levels of energy audits (feasibility through investment-grade) at complex commercial and institutional facilities, identifying actionable optimization opportunities.
  • Design and manage data collection strategies, including use of metering equipment, data loggers, and existing building systems, to support engineering analysis.
  • Develop and analyze whole-building energy models using industry-standard tools (e.g., TRACE, eQuest, DOE-2.2), ensuring alignment with applicable codes such as ASHRAE 90.1 and Title 24.
  • Perform detailed quantitative analyses of ECM performance using advanced Excel modeling; assess current system operations and introduce improved analytical approaches where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners on high-performance building design efforts, producing required documentation for certifications such as LEED, ENERGY STAR, and related programs, and acting as a subject matter expert during submissions.
  • Guide clients through identification and acquisition of applicable rebates, grants, and performance-based incentives tied to energy projects.
  • Build financial evaluation models assessing project viability, including metrics such as payback period, lifecycle cost, and return on investment.
  • Contribute to proposal development, technical documentation, and preparation of project-specific RFP materials.
  • Engage directly with facility personnel to understand operational challenges, uncover inefficiencies, and define project goals and success criteria.

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of utility pricing structures, energy markets, demand response programs, and cost modeling.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the full lifecycle of energy projects, from feasibility analysis through implementation and follow-up.
  • Strong foundation in HVAC systems and energy efficiency principles, including both design and construction considerations.
  • Ability to interpret and leverage architectural and MEP construction documents for performance analysis.
  • Hands-on experience evaluating building systems in the field, including diagnosing performance issues and recommending improvements.
  • Proven track record of quantifying energy savings and delivering solutions across areas such as distributed generation, renewables, water efficiency, and waste reduction.
  • Experience with energy modeling platforms (e.g., TRACE 3D, IES, eQuest) for compliance and predictive analysis.
  • Capability to troubleshoot complex building systems, including central plants and air-side systems in large commercial environments.
  • Familiarity with utility billing structures and rate analysis methodologies.
  • Experience navigating utility incentive programs for both retrofit projects and new construction.
  • Knowledge of lifecycle cost analysis methodologies, including federal tools (e.g., DOE BLCC) and private-sector equivalents.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals across mechanical and electrical systems such as pumps, boilers, chillers, motors, and lighting.
  • Advanced data handling and visualization skills; familiarity with system architecture and cybersecurity considerations is a plus.
  • Strong customer-facing skills with the ability to uncover needs, evaluate options, and communicate technical findings clearly.
