Substation Relay Settings Engineer (Remote)
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, calculate, and maintain protective relay settings for transmission and distribution substations (typically 4 kV through EHV levels).
- Perform protection coordination and short-circuit studies using industry-standard software.
- Prepare and review relay settings files, logic diagrams, and setting calculation documentation.
- Support substation commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting, including on-site support as required.
- Analyze system disturbances and relay misoperations; recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure relay settings comply with utility standards, NERC/PRC requirements, and applicable regional reliability criteria.
- Coordinate with SCADA, communications, and automation teams to ensure proper relay integration.
- Review vendor drawings, relay logic, and factory acceptance test (FAT) documentation.
- Support protection upgrades, relay replacements, and modernization projects.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
- Maintain accurate records of relay settings, revisions, and change management documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in substation protection and relay settings.
- Strong knowledge of power system protection principles, including:
- Overcurrent, distance, differential, directional, and pilot protection schemes
- Transformer, bus, line, feeder, and generator protection
- Hands-on experience with microprocessor-based relays from major vendors such as:
- SEL, GE Multilin, ABB/Hitachi Energy, Siemens, or equivalent
- Proficiency with protection and coordination software (e.g., ASPEN, SKM, ETAP, CYME, CAPE).
- Familiarity with NERC PRC standards, utility practices, and industry codes.
- Ability to read and interpret one-lines, three-lines, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
