With over 60 years of experience and a growing presence across North America, our client has a passion for shaping the future of mobility and is seeking a California-based Associate Vice President (AVP) to join a dynamic planning team. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a transportation planning expert to lead high-impact projects, drive business development, and shape the strategic direction of a growing public sector portfolio across California based out of their Oakland or Los Angeles office.


Position Overview

As an AVP, you'll lead multidisciplinary teams and deliver strategic transportation planning and policy projects for clients such as SCAG, LA Metro, SANDAG, LADOT, Caltrans, SACOG, MTC, Metrolink, and BART. You'll also play a key role in client engagement, mentoring staff, and expanding the firm's presence in the California market.


What You'll Do

  • Lead the development and delivery of multimodal transportation plans, equity studies, corridor strategies, and policy frameworks
  • Oversee project execution, ensuring alignment with scope, budget, and quality standards
  • Mentor and manage junior and mid-level staff
  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions
  • Lead proposal development and strategic business development initiatives
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, tools, and innovations
  • Build and maintain strong client and partner relationships to support long-term growth

Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Deep knowledge of California transportation agencies, planning processes, and policy frameworks
  • Experience with travel market analysis, GIS, data analytics, and modeling tools
  • Strong project budgeting, risk management, and team coordination skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Soft Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Collaborative, proactive, and detail-oriented
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, client-facing environments

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Transportation, Public Policy, Civil Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • 10+ years of relevant transportation planning experience
  • Proven success in project delivery, client management, and business development

Compensation

💵 $160,000 - $200,000 (based on experience and location)
🎯 Annual performance-based bonus
