Director of Power Markets Strategy

Position Summary

The Director of Power Markets Strategy leads long‑term strategic planning and market analysis across wholesale power and natural gas markets. This role provides market intelligence, scenario modeling, and commercial insights that guide investment decisions, portfolio strategy, and enterprise risk management. The position works cross‑functionally with trading, supply, regulatory, finance, and clean‑energy teams to align organizational strategy with evolving market conditions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Market Intelligence & Forecasting

  • Analyze regional and national fundamentals for power and natural gas markets, including load growth drivers such as electrification, data center expansion, and emerging technologies.
  • Track supply/demand balances, pricing trends, capacity market developments, and infrastructure constraints.
  • Produce long‑range forecasts and strategic outlooks to support planning, commercial strategy, and capital investments.
  • Translate market signals into actionable recommendations for internal stakeholders.

2. Commercial Portfolio Strategy

  • Partner with trading, wholesale energy, and supply teams to optimize gas and power portfolios, including transportation, storage, hedging, and asset‑backed strategies.
  • Evaluate commercial performance across a range of price, load, and reliability scenarios.
  • Support strategic decisions related to resource adequacy, firm capacity procurement, and integration of renewable or distributed energy resources.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance margin capture, reduce risk, and improve portfolio resilience.

3. Regulatory & Policy Strategy

  • Monitor regulatory developments across federal, regional, and state jurisdictions, including rules affecting capacity markets, reliability standards, emissions policy, infrastructure permitting, and clean‑energy mandates.
  • Conduct scenario planning to assess policy impacts on commercial strategy, operations, and long‑term resource planning.
  • Collaborate with regulatory and external affairs teams to ensure strategic alignment and inform organizational positions.

4. Corporate Strategy & Growth Initiatives

  • Identify emerging opportunities in clean energy, storage, distributed generation, advanced grid technologies, and new product offerings.
  • Conduct market, financial, and competitive assessments to support strategic investment decisions and potential M&A activity.
  • Develop long‑term strategic roadmaps for energy market participation, supply strategies, and new business development.
  • Support enterprise‑level planning processes through data‑driven insights and scenario analyses.

5. Risk Management & Scenario Modeling

  • Build and maintain market models that evaluate risk across a range of weather, commodity price, infrastructure, and regulatory scenarios.
  • Assess risk‑adjusted returns for major commercial, operational, and capital decisions.
  • Partner with risk management to ensure alignment between market strategy and enterprise risk frameworks.

6. Cross‑Functional Leadership

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to senior leadership, presenting market insights, forward‑looking risks, and strategic recommendations.
  • Lead cross‑functional working groups focused on market strategy, forecasting, and commercial optimization.
  • Mentor teams on market dynamics, modeling methodologies, and strategic analysis.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in wholesale energy markets, utilities, trading, natural gas strategy, power market analysis, or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of RTO/ISO market structures, capacity markets, gas‑power interactions, and infrastructure constraints.
  • Proficiency in forecasting, market modeling, risk analytics, and scenario planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence executive stakeholders and communicate complex concepts clearly.
  • Background in economics, finance, engineering, data analytics, or a related discipline.
