Lead the Development of Community Solar & DG Projects
We are seeking a senior Development Director to lead a growing portfolio of community solar and distributed generation (DG) projects across the Northeastern and Mid‑Atlantic United States, with a strong emphasis on Massachusetts and Maryland.
This role is ideal for a development professional who understands how to deliver repeatable, policy‑driven solar projects by navigating state programs, municipal processes, interconnection constraints, and community engagement requirements.
Role Overview
The Development Director - East will be responsible for originating, advancing, and overseeing a portfolio of DG and community solar projects (typically 1-10 MWac) from early‑stage development through construction readiness.
The role includes responsibility for development strategy, budget and schedule oversight, team leadership, and close coordination with internal and external stakeholders to successfully deliver projects within state‑specific incentive and regulatory frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead development activities for a portfolio of community solar and DG projects, advancing sites through land control, permitting, interconnection, and incentive qualification
- Establish and manage development stage‑gates, capital deployment milestones, and risk assessments
- Evaluate project feasibility based on interconnection constraints, local permitting requirements, zoning, and policy program eligibility
- Manage development timelines to ensure projects remain viable within state program and incentive deadlines
- Define and execute a regional development strategy aligned with portfolio growth objectives
- Lead, manage, and mentor development team members; oversee workload allocation and performance
- Drive process standardization and improvement to support high‑volume, repeatable project execution
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with Interconnection, Real Estate, Finance, Engineering, Construction, Legal, and Accounting teams
- Partner with senior leadership on project investment decisions and portfolio prioritization
- Lead regular development team meetings to review project status, risks, and next steps
- Negotiate and manage third‑party development support contracts, including landowner engagement, municipal outreach, and permitting consultants
- Oversee development budgets, reporting, and data tracking across the portfolio
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, environmental studies, or a related field; Master's degree and/or PMP preferred
- 8+ years of experience in solar development, renewable energy, or related infrastructure development
- Demonstrated experience with community solar and/or distributed generation projects
- Strong understanding of state‑level incentive programs, tariffs, and policy frameworks, particularly in MA and MD
- Deep familiarity with the full DG project lifecycle, including land use, municipal permitting, interconnection, and construction handoff
- Proven leadership experience managing and mentoring development teams
- Experience working cross‑functionally in fast‑paced, high‑growth platforms
- Strong stakeholder management skills with municipalities, landowners, utilities, consultants, and program administrators
- Excellent organizational, communication, and prioritization skills
- Ability to adapt quickly and make informed decisions in a dynamic regulatory and market environment
- Willingness to travel up to 25%
