Job Captain

We are seeking a Job Captain to join our team in the New York office (hybrid) and will work at the client site in Chesapeake, VA. This position plays a key part in ensuring the timely, accurate, and code-compliant delivery of multi-site retail projects from design development through construction.

The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver who thrives in fast-paced environments and is committed to design consistency, technical accuracy, and cross-team coordination.

What You'll Do

  • Partner with the Project Manager and help guide designers in producing and issuing accurate sets of construction documents as well as other required client deliverables

  • Coordinate with landlords, MEP, and Structural consultant teams to ensure complete and timely project delivery

  • Lead, mentor, and train junior Designers

  • Research, review, and implement CBC & IBC codes

  • Address plan check comments from local jurisdictions

  • Issue construction documents for bid and permit

  • Perform site surveys & punch walks

  • Perform job site visits to review the progress of construction; prepare and issue field reports

  • Participate in various aspects of construction administration; respond to RFIs, revise drawings based on RFIs, bulletins, and addenda, and review submittals

  • Travel may be required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in Architecture or equivalent experience

  • Experience with retail rollout or multi-site commercial projects, including site adaptation of prototypical designs

  • Proficiency in Revit and Bluebeam; working knowledge of SketchUp and Photoshop is a plus

  • Strong understanding of building codes, especially IBC, CBC, and ADA, with the ability to apply them effectively to drawing sets

  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience leading coordination efforts with clients, consultants, and team members

Nice to Have

  • Experience delegating tasks to junior staff and conducting thorough QC reviews

  • Ability to identify and implement process improvements in drawing production and team workflows

  • Experience working within a multi-office, cross-time-zone firm structure
