Overview
A Transportation Lead Engineer is responsible for leading, managing, and delivering transportation infrastructure projects across the Madison metro area and surrounding regions. This position serves as both a technical leader and project manager-overseeing design production, supervising engineering teams, and driving business development to grow the firm's transportation practice. Candidates must be licensed Professional Engineers in Wisconsin and have strong experience with WisDOT standards and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage multiple transportation projects within Madison and nearby municipalities, ensuring on-time and high-quality delivery.
- Oversee project budgets, schedules, and design workflows, serving as the primary point of contact for clients, subconsultants, and project teams.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, architects, and multidisciplinary design teams on roadway, trail, traffic signal, utility, and storm sewer projects.
- Lead design development using MicroStation and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D while ensuring compliance with WisDOT standards.
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and leadership to engineering staff to support growth and quality across the transportation group.
- Support business development initiatives, including proposal writing, client outreach, attending industry events, and developing new project opportunities.
- Coordinate with municipal agencies and local governments on regulatory requirements, permitting, and design standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Wisconsin.
- Minimum of 4+ years of civil/transportation engineering experience (some roles may require 10+ years depending on level).
- Proven experience with WisDOT transportation engineering standards and procedures.
- Proficiency with MicroStation or AutoCAD Civil 3D design tools.
- Strong project management, communication, and client‑facing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with municipal design and local government coordination.
- Familiarity with 3D modeling or visualization software.
- Background in business development, including client management and proposal development.
