Mechanical Department Head
An established engineering consulting firm serving the commercial building market is seeking a Mechanical Department Head to lead, grow, and elevate its mechanical engineering practice in the Charlotte region. This role combines technical leadership, people development, client engagement, and operational oversight within a fast-paced consulting environment. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in commercial HVAC and building systems design, along with proven experience managing teams and contributing to business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Project Leadership
- Provide technical oversight and quality assurance on mechanical designs for commercial projects, including:
- HVAC systems
- Plumbing
- Fire protection coordination
- Energy and sustainable design strategies
- Serve as Engineer of Record on select projects.
- Establish and maintain design standards, tools, and best practices.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and manage a team of mechanical engineers and designers.
- Mentor staff through technical guidance, performance feedback, and career development.
- Support hiring efforts and help build a scalable, high-performing department.
- Foster a collaborative and accountable team culture.
Client & Business Engagement
- Act as a key technical and strategic contact for clients.
- Participate in project pursuits, proposals, and interviews.
- Support long-term client relationships and identify opportunities for repeat work.
- Collaborate with other discipline leads to deliver integrated building solutions.
Operational & Strategic Responsibilities
- Assist in departmental planning, workload forecasting, and resource management.
- Contribute to annual budgeting and revenue planning for the mechanical group.
- Partner with firm leadership to support regional growth initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina or ability to obtain through reciprocity.
- 8+ years of experience in mechanical engineering consulting, with a focus on commercial buildings.
- Demonstrated experience leading teams or departments.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable codes
- Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD
