Principal Transmission Planning Engineer
Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and forward-thinking Principal Transmission Planning Engineer to lead and support complex energy infrastructure projects. This role focuses on transmission system modeling, planning studies, and strategic analysis to enable reliable, efficient, and sustainable grid development. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and a collaborative mindset to drive impactful solutions across utility, renewable, and industrial sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and perform advanced transmission system studies including:
- Load flow and contingency analysis
- Short circuit and protection coordination
- Reactive power and voltage stability assessments
- Dynamic and transient stability simulations
- Generation interconnection and system impact studies
- Develop and validate transmission system models using tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, or similar platforms.
- Guide the preparation of technical documentation including planning reports, system diagrams, and study results.
- Collaborate with utilities, developers, and regulatory bodies to support interconnection processes and grid modernization initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards and guidelines (NERC, FERC, IEEE, regional reliability councils).
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical leadership within the transmission planning team.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and industry trends in transmission and grid planning.
- Support proposal development, client engagement, and strategic growth initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in transmission planning, power systems analysis, or related engineering roles.
- Proficiency with transmission planning tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, or similar.
- Strong understanding of grid reliability, system protection, and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience with renewable integration, distributed energy resources, and utility interconnection processes.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills; ability to manage cross-functional teams and client relationships.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with GIS, CAD, and scripting tools (Python, MATLAB) is a plus.
