The Role
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Senior Ecologist to join a growing ecology and biological sciences team based in Perth, WA.
This role is ideally suited to an experienced ecologist with 5-10 years' professional experience who has spent multiple years working in the Perth region and has strong familiarity with WA environments, flora, fauna and regulatory processes. You will play a lead role in the delivery of ecological surveys, impact assessments, approvals documentation and ecological reporting, while also mentoring junior staff and contributing to project management.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and deliver flora, fauna and ecological surveys, including baseline, targeted and detailed assessments
- Prepare and review technical ecological reports, impact assessments and compliance documentation
- Provide expert advice on environmental approvals under WA and Commonwealth legislation (e.g. EP Act, EPBC Act)
- Manage and coordinate field programs, including logistics, scheduling and data quality control
- Liaise with regulators, clients, landowners and stakeholders throughout project lifecycles
- Support or lead project management, including budgets, timelines and resourcing
- Mentor and supervise junior ecologists, botanists and zoologists
Key Requirements
- 5-10 years' professional experience in ecology, botany or zoology consulting
- Based in Perth, Western Australia, with several years' experience working locally
- Proven experience delivering ecological assessments within Perth and broader WA environments
- Strong knowledge of WA flora, fauna, vegetation communities and threatened species
- Demonstrated experience with environmental approvals and regulatory processes in WA
- High‑level ecological reporting, data analysis and technical writing skills
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Current Australian working rights and valid WA driver's licence
Desirable Experience
- Specialisation in botany or zoology
- Experience with threatened species assessments, biodiversity offsets or ecological monitoring
- Familiarity with GIS, data management or spatial analysis
- Prior experience mentoring or managing junior staff
- Background in projects within the resources, infrastructure, renewables or land development sectors
