Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer (Water/Wastewater)
A nationally recognized engineering consultancy focused exclusively on the water sector is seeking a senior-level Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer to support complex water, wastewater, stormwater, and reuse projects. Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with project managers and project stakeholders throughout planning and design phases
- Develop scopes of work for instrumentation, controls, and SCADA systems
- Lead I&C design efforts for medium to large-scale water and wastewater projects
- Design PLC- and SCADA-based control systems and associated communication networks
- Specify industrial communication systems including fiber optic, radio telemetry, and wireless technologies
- Develop SCADA network architectures and block diagrams
- Select and specify field instrumentation and prepare ISA datasheets
- Develop P&IDs, control narratives, control strategies, and I/O point lists
- Design control panel layouts and review vendor submittals
- Prepare technical specifications for instruments, PLCs, networking equipment, and computing systems
- Develop preliminary and final construction cost estimates for I&C systems
- Facilitate design workshops covering instrumentation standards, HMI graphics, and system preferences
- Mentor and train junior instrumentation and controls engineers
- Prepare technical memorandums, reports, and design documentation
- Manage the instrumentation scope for medium to large water and wastewater treatment facilities
- Perform quality control and quality assurance reviews of I&C designs
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal I&C standards and master specifications
- Balance multiple project priorities while managing scope, schedule, and budget
- Coordinate and oversee I&C engineers and CADD technicians to ensure timely, high-quality deliverables
- Participate in client-facing discussions and support business development efforts
- Conduct site visits during construction and operational phases as required
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering
- Approximately 10-15 years of experience in instrumentation and control systems for water and wastewater treatment facilities and pumping stations
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration
- Extensive experience designing industrial instrumentation and control systems for municipal water and wastewater applications
- Strong expertise in P&IDs, control schematics, and industrial communication networks
- Ability to develop I&C scopes, budgets, and schedules at the conceptual design level
- Proven ability to lead complex design efforts with minimal supervision
- Strong problem-solving skills and sound technical judgment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation and presentations
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing project demands
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related engineering discipline
- Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation
