Senior-Level Protection & Control Engineer
Position Summary
We are seeking a Protection & Control Engineer with 5+ years of experience supporting utility, consulting, or EPC projects within the power delivery industry. This individual will be responsible for the design, analysis, and implementation of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution substations. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge of relay protection, control system design, and industry standards while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and utility clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop protection and control design packages for transmission and distribution substations.
- Prepare wiring diagrams, elementary drawings, schematics, AC/DC panel designs, and cable schedules.
- Perform protection studies and relay settings using software such as ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, ETAP, or SKM.
- Develop relay coordination studies, fault analysis, and system protection philosophies.
- Support specification, selection, and configuration of protective relays and substation equipment.
- Review relay settings, design calculations, and engineering deliverables for quality and compliance.
- Coordinate with utility clients, project managers, and engineering teams throughout project execution.
- Provide technical support during design reviews, commissioning, testing, and field implementation activities.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable utility standards, NERC, IEEE, NEC, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Protection & Control Engineering within utility, consulting, or EPC environments.
- EIT certification required, PE license preferred, or actively pursuing licensure.
- Experience developing protection schemes for transmission and/or distribution substations.
- Proficiency with relay settings and coordination software such as ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, ETAP, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with SEL, GE, ABB/Hitachi Energy, Siemens, or Schweitzer relay platforms.
- Knowledge of power system analysis, short circuit studies, coordination studies, and relay applications.
- Strong understanding of IEEE, NERC, NEC, and utility design standards.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interact directly with clients and project stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with IEC 61850 implementation and substation automation systems.
- Field testing, commissioning, or startup experience.
- Previous experience working on transmission projects ranging from 69kV through 500kV.
- PE License in any U.S. state.
