Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Substation Engineer to provide technical leadership, project management, and engineering expertise for transmission and distribution substation projects.

The successful candidate will independently manage engineering assignments, provide guidance to junior staff, support utility stakeholders, and ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

General Engineering Responsibilities

• Develop engineering reports, work plans, and technical recommendations.
• Manage projects from planning through completion, including schedule and budget oversight.
• Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, vendors, utilities, and external stakeholders.
• Mentor and provide direction to less experienced engineers.
• Analyze technical data and develop engineering solutions.
• Maintain and approve technical records, drawings, and documentation.
• Prepare project cost estimates, schedules, and work orders.
• Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, regulations, and utility requirements.
• Support member utilities and develop engineering standards and specifications.
• Maintain current knowledge of industry practices and emerging technologies.

Substation Responsibilities

• Develop specifications and bid packages for transmission and distribution substations.
• Lead substation siting activities.
• Prepare construction specifications and contract documentation.
• Design and review new substations, upgrades, expansions, and conversion projects.
• Design and review grounding systems and associated details.
• Ensure compliance with applicable NEMA, NEC, NESC, ANSI, IEEE, and other industry standards.
• Provide technical guidance and engineering solutions for complex substation projects.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously and support other engineering staff as needed.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.

Preferred

• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

Experience

• Minimum 7+ years of progressively responsible engineering experience.
• Strong background in substation design and project execution.

Desired Skills

• Experience with substation construction, inspection, and contract administration.
• Strong understanding of electrical drawings, plans, surveys, and diagrams.
• Experience with CAD/CADD software.
• Excellent project management and organizational skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
• Ability to present technical information to a variety of audiences.
• Proven ability to mentor engineers and lead project teams.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Additional Requirements

• Valid driver's license required.
• Occasional overnight travel may be required.
• Ability to work outside normal business hours when necessary.
• Must follow all applicable safety requirements and PPE standards.
