A growing energy consulting organization is seeking a Senior Consultant - Regulatory Economics to support continued expansion and lead high-impact client engagements across North America. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of energy markets, policy, and infrastructure, advising clients navigating the evolving power sector.
The organization partners with utilities, developers, large energy users, and public agencies to deliver analytical and strategic insights across power markets, regulation, and decarbonization initiatives. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, consulting experience, and the ability to translate complex regulatory and economic challenges into actionable strategies.
Role Overview
The Senior Consultant will lead project execution, manage client relationships, and contribute to business development efforts. This individual will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver advisory services across regulatory, economic, and market-focused engagements.
Core Areas of Expertise (one or more):
Energy Infrastructure Planning & IRP
- Integrated resource planning (IRP), load forecasting, and resource selection
- Evaluation of generation, transmission, and demand-side investments
- Cost-benefit analysis and decision framework design
- Renewable integration and interconnection strategy
- Competitive procurements and RFP design/evaluation
Clean Energy Policy & Market Design
- Analysis of federal, state, and regional policy impacts on energy markets
- Understanding of organized wholesale markets (RTO/ISO structures)
- Transmission planning and interconnection policy dynamics
- Knowledge of incentives, subsidies, and emerging policy frameworks
Utility Economics & Rate Design
- Cost of service, cost allocation, and rate design methodologies
- Revenue requirements and utility tariff analysis
- Pricing strategies (e.g., TOU, net metering, decoupling)
- Customer segmentation and regulatory cost recovery strategies
Economic Modeling & Analysis
- Cost-benefit modeling and macroeconomic analysis
- Discount rate development and financial evaluation techniques
- Market and supply chain analysis, including labor dynamics
- Assessment of societal and policy impacts (e.g., energy equity considerations)
Regulatory Finance
- Utility financial modeling and regulatory accounting
- Capital structure and cost of capital analysis (ROE, DCF)
- Revenue requirement modeling and tariff evaluation
Key Responsibilities
- Lead consulting engagements and provide strategic, technical advice to clients
- Manage project scope, timelines, and deliverables across multiple workstreams
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on complex energy and regulatory issues
- Develop high-quality reports, analyses, and presentations
- Support business development, including proposal creation and client relationship building
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to team capability development
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in the energy sector with expertise in regulatory, economic, or market analysis
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking capabilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including client-facing experience
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, consulting environment
- Knowledge of key industry drivers including regulatory policy, market structures, and grid reliability
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in economics, finance, engineering, or related field preferred
