Senior Structural Design Engineer
My client is a dynamic, privately held structural engineering firm based in New York City. With a team of just under 10 professionals, they specialize in structural design for ground-up residential and commercial construction across the five boroughs. As the firm grows, they are seeking a Senior Structural Design Engineer to step into a critical leadership role with responsibility across design, client engagement, team development, and organizational growth.
Position Overview
The successful candidate will take full ownership of structural design projects while actively contributing to the strategic and operational development of the business. This is an opportunity to become a foundational member of the leadership team within a fast-moving, agile organization.
Responsibilities
Lead the structural design and analysis for new residential and commercial construction projects
Serve as the primary point of contact for architects, contractors, clients, and regulatory bodies
Review and approve calculations, drawings, and deliverables from junior engineers and consultants
Conduct site visits to ensure adherence to design standards and regulatory compliance
Mentor junior engineering staff and foster a culture of technical excellence and accountability
Collaborate directly with ownership on planning, business development, recruitment, and departmental growth
Support hiring and onboarding of future team members to expand the structural division
Contribute to internal process development and long-term strategic planning
Candidate Requirements
8-15 years of experience in NYC structural engineering, specifically in ground-up design of NYC projects
Valid Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York State
Deep understanding of NYC building codes, DOB procedures, and permitting standards
Advanced proficiency in structural software tools such as ETABS, RAM, SAP2000, and Revit
Proven ability to lead design efforts and manage high-complexity projects from concept through completion
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust internally and externally
Willingness to work in a small, entrepreneurial environment with high levels of autonomy and responsibility
