Senior Transportation Engineer

I am working with a client who is seeking an experienced Senior Transportation Engineer to join their growing team. This individual will play a key role in leading transportation planning and engineering projects, supporting public and private sector clients, and contributing technical expertise to complex roadway and mobility initiatives. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator, an effective project manager, and someone who thrives in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment.


Position Overview

The Senior Transportation Engineer will be responsible for managing and delivering transportation engineering and traffic design projects from concept through construction. This role requires a deep understanding of transportation systems, roadway design standards, multimodal planning, and agency coordination. The engineer will provide high‑level technical leadership, support client relationships, and mentor junior staff.


Key Responsibilities

Project Management & Leadership

  • Lead and manage transportation engineering projects, ensuring high-quality deliverables, schedule adherence, and budget control.
  • Serve as primary client contact, building strong relationships with municipalities, agencies, and private-sector partners.
  • Oversee project scopes, task assignments, and multidisciplinary coordination.

Technical Expertise

  • Prepare and review traffic engineering and transportation design documents, including:
    • Roadway geometrics and layout
    • Channelization and signing/striping plans
    • Traffic signal design
    • Traffic control and construction staging plans
    • Multimodal and pedestrian facility improvements
  • Conduct technical analyses such as sight distance evaluations, operational studies, and safety reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal standards (e.g., WSDOT, MUTCD, AASHTO).

Team Collaboration & Mentoring

  • Provide technical guidance to junior and mid‑level engineers.
  • Review work products, offering quality assurance and professional development support.
  • Collaborate across internal teams including planning, engineering, and survey departments.

Client & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Present findings and design concepts to city staff, councils, review boards, and community groups.
  • Prepare proposals, scopes, and cost estimates, contributing to business development efforts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field (required).
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), or the ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
  • 8-12+ years of experience in transportation engineering, roadway design, or traffic engineering.
  • Proficiency with design tools such as AutoCAD/Civil 3D, AutoTurn, and traffic analysis or lighting software.
  • Strong understanding of MUTCD, AASHTO, WSDOT standards, and municipal requirements.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Traffic operations and safety studies.
  • Experience with public infrastructure projects and agency coordination.
  • Multimodal transportation planning and complete streets design.
  • Construction support services and field observations.
