Substation Designer
We are seeking an experienced Substation Designer to support high-voltage utility and energy projects across the Southeast. This hybrid role combines remote flexibility with in-office collaboration and occasional site visits. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in CAD drafting and substation layout design, with a focus on accuracy, constructability, and utility standards.
Responsibilities:
- Develop detailed CAD drawings for substation physical layout, including equipment arrangement, grounding, conduit routing, and control house layouts.
- Create electrical schematics such as single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and cable schedules.
- Generate bills of materials (BOMs) and material takeoffs to support procurement and construction.
- Review vendor drawings and integrate them into design packages.
- Conduct site visits to gather field data and support design validation.
- Collaborate with engineers and project teams to ensure cohesive, multi-discipline design packages.
- Perform quality checks to ensure compliance with standards and project requirements.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology or equivalent drafting/design certification; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in substation design and drafting for utility or consulting firms.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation; experience with 3D CAD or Inventor is a plus.
- Strong understanding of substation components and applicable standards (IEEE, NESC, NEC).
- Experience with protection and control (P&C) panel layouts and wiring diagrams.
- Excellent attention to detail and communication skills.
- Ability to travel up to 25% for site support.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working within utility document management systems (e.g., TEAMS, MAXIMO, STOMP, Vault).
- Familiarity with renewable energy or grid modernization projects.
- Exposure to basic substation-related calculations (e.g., grounding, equipment sizing).
