Position Summary
The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading field survey operations, overseeing survey crews, and ensuring the accurate collection of surveying data for a variety of transportation, land development, and infrastructure projects. This role requires a strong balance of technical expertise, leadership, and field coordination to deliver high-quality results safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise daily survey field crews, assigning tasks and ensuring productivity and safety standards are met
- Perform and oversee field surveys including boundary, topographic, construction staking, right-of-way, and as-built surveys
- Operate and maintain survey equipment such as total stations, GPS/GNSS units, data collectors, and levels
- Ensure field data is accurate, complete, and properly documented for transfer to office staff and project teams
- Read, interpret, and implement survey plans, plats, construction drawings, and specifications
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and inspectors to support project schedules and objectives
- Conduct field calculations, layout verification, and quality control checks
- Adhere to state surveying standards, project requirements, and company safety policies
- Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment in good working condition
- Assist with training and mentoring junior survey staff
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree or technical training in surveying or a related field preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive field survey experience, including leadership responsibilities
- Strong knowledge of surveying principles, methods, and best practices
- Proficiency with modern survey instruments and data collection software
- Valid driver's license with the ability to operate company vehicles
Preferred Qualifications
- Surveyor-in-Training (SIT) certification or progress toward professional licensure
- Experience with transportation, roadway, or civil infrastructure projects
- Familiarity with Indiana surveying standards and practices
