Compensation

Salary Range: $95,000 - $145,000

This range reflects the anticipated compensation for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on qualifications, experience, location, and other factors.

About the Role

The Transmission System Operator is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of a high-voltage transmission system from a centralized operations center. In this role, you will monitor and control transmission assets in real time, utilizing Energy Management System (EMS) tools and operational data to assess system conditions and respond to potential reliability concerns.

This position operates in a 24/7 control room environment on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays. All work is performed in accordance with applicable reliability and regulatory standards, including NERC, ISO/RTO requirements, regional reliability organizations, and FERC regulations, while collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to maintain system reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, analyze, and respond to real-time electric system conditions using the EMS.
  • Operate and control electric transmission facilities in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, operating procedures, and reliability standards.
  • Coordinate with field personnel and neighboring utilities to safely remove and return transmission equipment to service during normal and abnormal conditions.
  • Monitor and control voltage levels and power flows to maintain system reliability; analyze operating conditions and implement corrective actions as required.
  • Perform high-voltage switching operations during normal and emergency conditions while adhering to established safety procedures.
  • Communicate planned and unplanned transmission outages in accordance with operational and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of transmission operations and maintenance procedures, guides, and manuals.
  • Support EMS system integrity, including one-line diagram maintenance and system updates.
  • Maintain accurate records and comply with all applicable documentation and retention requirements.
  • Provide shift coverage as needed in accordance with established staffing requirements.
  • Participate in required training to maintain NERC certification.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly during time-sensitive or abnormal system conditions.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, critical thinking abilities, and sound operational judgment.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team-based control room culture.
  • Strong technical aptitude with a solid foundation in mathematics and electrical principles.

Required / Desired Qualifications

  • Associate Degree (AAS) in Electrical Technology or a related science or technology field preferred; equivalent military experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the electrical power industry or military power operations environment.
  • Prior experience working within an ISO/RTO-controlled transmission system environment preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Formal education or technical training related to power plant operations, electrical work, instrumentation and controls, or a similar discipline.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts in a 24/7 transmission operations environment.
