Position Overview
The Transportation Engineer is a key member of a municipal services team and supports the planning, design, and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects. This role assists with roadway and transportation network planning, traffic analysis, feasibility studies, and coordination during construction to ensure projects meet safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The position collaborates closely with internal teams, public agencies, contractors, and community stakeholders to support successful transportation outcomes.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
- Assist with traffic studies, transportation modeling, and system evaluations, ensuring analyses, intersection designs, and transit assessments align with best practices, regulatory requirements, and municipal objectives.
- Support the development of transportation infrastructure projects from concept through completion, helping maintain project schedules and budgets.
- Coordinate with engineers, planners, architects, and contractors to support effective project execution.
- Analyze transportation data to identify operational or safety deficiencies and assist in developing improvement strategies.
- Collaborate with government agencies, public entities, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and environmental requirements.
- Assist in preparing technical reports, proposals, and presentations for municipal clients, regulatory agencies, and leadership.
- Respond to public inquiries and assist in addressing community concerns related to transportation projects and traffic operations.
- Support monitoring of construction activities to ensure designs are followed and safety standards are maintained.
- Conduct site observations and provide recommendations for design or construction adjustments as needed.
- Stay informed of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in transportation engineering.
- Assist with signal operations coordination, traffic improvements, safety analyses, and corridor studies to enhance system performance.
- Review transportation plans prepared by external consultants for public roadway improvements, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
- Participate in public meetings and workshops to discuss transportation projects, studies, and development proposals, providing technical input and responding to stakeholder questions (preferred).
- Assist with long-range transportation planning efforts and support municipal leadership by providing technical guidance on best practices, policy considerations, and investment strategies.
- Support the review and enhancement of transportation-related standards, specifications, and codes to ensure alignment with current regulations and long-term mobility and safety goals.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of transportation planning, traffic operations, and roadway design principles.
- Experience with engineering design software, traffic modeling tools, and GIS applications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with environmental and transportation safety regulations (preferred but not required).
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in transportation engineering or a related role.
- Experience with traffic simulation tools, transportation modeling software, and traffic data collection and analysis methods preferred.
- Engineering Intern (EI) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) certification or Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) designation is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds as needed.
- Ability to travel to project and construction sites.
- Ability to access and navigate active job sites and construction areas safely.
