Automation Engineer II
Overview
The Automation Engineer II plays a key role in supporting the design and development of automation systems for manufacturing processes, equipment, critical systems, and facility infrastructure. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, this individual contributes to the creation of drawings, documentation, and other deliverables. They are capable of managing intermediate-level tasks independently and may delegate basic tasks to junior staff.
This role involves collaboration across disciplines, client interaction, and the ability to manage scopes of work and deliverables. The Automation Engineer II may lead small projects or take primary responsibility for specific phases of larger projects, including programming, planning, feasibility, concept development, detailed design, construction documentation, and construction administration.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute design tasks under the supervision of senior engineers.
- Design basic automation systems in compliance with codes and in coordination with other disciplines.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, and internal/external team members to ensure cohesive and constructible designs.
- Perform basic engineering calculations and select instrumentation/devices to meet project requirements.
- Develop documentation such as narratives, reports, drawings, and diagrams for construction.
- Utilize tools such as Microsoft Office, BIM software, and vendor platforms.
- Conduct field investigations to integrate designs with existing systems.
- Participate in professional development activities.
- Manage multiple projects or tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited program in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or Robotics/Mechatronics.
- At least 3 years of experience, preferably in a design firm environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Bluebeam.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D, AutoCAD Plant3D, or Revit.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Office.
- Experience coordinating with cross-discipline teams, vendors, and construction partners.
- Familiarity with instrumentation and controls engineering calculations and deliverables.
- Understanding of network architectures and control systems documentation (e.g., IO lists, datasheets, specifications).
- Ability to interpret P&IDs and design control system schematics, panel drawings, and wiring plans.
- Knowledge of industrial control systems (DCS, SCADA, PLC, BAS/BMS, EMS/CMS) and manufacturers (e.g., DeltaV, Rockwell, Siemens).
- Familiarity with communication protocols (Ethernet-IP, BACnet, IO-Link).
- Basic understanding of electrical codes and industry standards (21 CFR Part 11, ISPE GAMP, ASME BPE, ISA standards).
- Registration for or completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
